Teaching peace : In a time of war
Teaching Peace in a Time of War documents the efforts of an elementary school on the outskirts of Belgrade, Serbia, to teach its students to resolve conflict peacefully. Inspired by the ideas of Canadian peace educator Hetty van Gurp, the teachers and the students in this documentary struggle against the powerful effects of war on children. We are encouraged by their desire to learn different ways of preventing and responding to conflict. Hetty van Gurp began teaching peaceful practices ten years ago after her fourteen year old son was critically injured and died as a result of a violent incident that occurred at his school. What started as a mother’s crusade against bullying has now blossomed into a major international movement that has caught the attention of educators and peacemakers around the world.
