The film begins with Jack McClane (Jai Courtney) being arrested in Moscow for killing a man. His father John (Willis) hasn't heard from his son in years so when he learns that he's in trouble in Moscow he decides to take a trip there to help him out. He makes his way to the courthouse where Jack is being tried when terrorists set off several explosives. Jack flees the courthouse with a 'government whistleblower' named Yuri Komarov (Sebastian Koch), who the terrorists want, when he's confronted by his father. Jack doesn't have time to explain things to his father and threatens to shoot him before taking off with Komarov once again. The terrorists, led by Alik (Radivoje Bukvic), pursue him and John joins in the chase (which is one of the coolest chase scenes ever filmed!). John soon learns that Jack is a CIA agent in an undercover operation and finds himself caught up in the action once again.
